This book made me think about a lot of daily things I do and say to my child and I am grateful for the new perspective and the little exercises it offered. While it won’t be easy to implement this way of talking, listening and parenting, I can only strive to do my best, as I would love to break the cycle in my family

The first time I purchased this book was in the 90s - it was much shorter, more direct, and easier to understand and use. It has become overly long and a bit intimidating! Sometimes it’s best to leave simple and direct things alone - this was one of them. For that reason, four instead of five stars. I’d suggest a newer, shortened edition without all the filler.

This book is easy to read and not preachy. It is interesting. Without fail, some tiny human will have you trying out it's methods in hours. But here is the thing, YOU WILL MASTER THE MOMENT. You and said kiddo will feel better about thr toughest situations. When using with little ones, instead of going all pretend therapist, I love little doses at a time and allowing them their own way to reflect. If the issue comes up again, they talk more and you can actually hear what they are saying and HELP BOTH OF YOU.
I send this book to friends as a welcome to pre teen years and it is well appreciated!
Best of luck and may the force be with you! You got this!!

If you work with kids or are a parent/caregiver, you NEED to read this book. There are exercises in it and they are opening my eyes to a lot of the language I use with kids.

I cannot say enough good things about this book. I picked it up while visiting my sister and couldn't put it down! Each chapter focuses on relevant and practical parenting issues and gives clear and manageable advice. Instead of telling parents to just be more patient, it actually provides simple things you can do and say (seriously, exact words and phrases) in the moment. You can practice these tips and get better, which is really encouraging.

It also doesn't beat you up for failing. The authors recognize that parents are people and have real feelings, so their advice never feels shaming or patronizing. I found this particularly refreshing because authors of parenting books usually seem perfect and are totally unrelatable.

I have found that my mindset has shifted quite a bit since reading this book. I'm actually planning to pick it up and go through it again to help reinforce the techniques. I HIGHLY recommend reading this!
